EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - STEERS FOR FEEDLOT TRIAL
F1 OR ABOVE (SPECKLE X BRITISH BREED) STEERS FOR FEEDLOT TRIAL
Interested in putting your Speckle Park genetics and management practices to the test against other British breeds?
Speckle Park International are seeking expressions of interest for F1 or above (Speckle x British breed) steers for a trial in mid 2023 that will compare the performance of Speckle Park against other British breeds under commercial feedlot conditions.
If SPI receive positive expressions and see the value in return for the exercise, Elders Killara at Quirindi will purchase a pen of 200 head on entry at prevailing rates on the day. Indicative prices will be available closer to the date. The proposed delivery date is August 2023 where the cattle will initially be backgrounded on an agistment property for 30 days. Following this the cattle will be moved into the feedlot where they will be fed for 85 days then processed with all data recorded.
The cattle must weigh 300-380kg on entry, be milk tooth steers only, by a registered Speckle Park Sire and a minimum of 30 days yard weaned prior to delivery. Killara requires a minimum lot size of 15 head per vendor.
If we receive more than the budgeted 200 head, the Technical Sub-Committee reserve the right to vet the nominations on points including but not limited to, breed composition, location, contemporary size, & weight uniformity.
SPI will cover the cost of backgrounding, genetic testing and performance recording. Vendors will be responsible for arranging their own transport to Killara.
SPI Technical Committee chairman Paul Meade commented that “with the Speckle Park breed going from strength to strength it is important we back this up with industry relevant carcase data for the economically driven commercial producer. This trial is designed to deliver such an outcome”.
Cattle viewing and a supplier day will occur throughout the trial for participating vendors. Trial results will also be supplied to each vendor for their individual animals as well as group averages.
To register your interest for the Speckle Park feedlot trial or to find out more information please email technical@specklepark.org before 30 November 2022.
The SPI Technical Committee and Board will review the expressions to determine if the project proceeds.
