MLA National Genetics Program: SPI at the Table

SPI has been invited to take part in Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) new project to design the next generation of national “reference populations” for beef and sheep.

These reference populations form the backbone of genetic evaluations – providing the data that drives the accuracy of EBVs and helps breeders make faster, more confident selection decisions.

MLA through the National Livestock Genetics Consortium (NLGC) aims to create a financially viable, co-invested and scientifically robust reference population for beef cattle.

As part of MLA’s call for Expressions of Interest, SPI submitted a proposal to ensure Speckle Park is included in this important initiative. The NLGC Taskforce, an industry group that brings together experts in genetics and the beef supply chain to guide national projects, reviewed 48 submissions and developed a draft program of work. From this process, the University of New England and the Animal Genetics & Breeding Unit (AGBU) were selected to lead the technical design phase with SPI among the groups to be engaged in shaping the program.

SPI’s involvement means the Speckle Park breed will be represented in national discussions on which animals, traits and genotyping strategies are prioritised. This keeps our breed connected to Australia’s cutting-edge research and development pipeline and ensures the benefits flow back to members through more accurate EBVs, stronger data and greater industry recognition.

The design process will run over the next six months, with projects expected to commence from July 2026.
